Consider Your Brand

Let’s say someone has two pairs of black running shoes. Let’s call this person, Janelle. She tells you that one pair is from Nike and the other is from Adidas. If she asks you to guess which shoe she got from the Nike store and which shoe she got from the Adidas store, how would you differentiate?

With the logo, of course. The Nike shoes would have a tick and the Adidas shoes would have three stripes. We can tell the difference because these are distinct features of their brands.

You have your own brand too. Every human being is distinct and it’s with these distinctions that we differentiate between ourselves – whether it’s physical appearance or personal character.

What’s a brand?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, It could be “a type of product made by a particular company and sold under a particular name” or “the set of qualities that people connect with a particular person, or the idea of themselves that the person tried to present to others.”

So the challenge today is to consider your own brand. What set of qualities do people connect with you? Take a few moments to reflect on these kind of questions and answer truthfully. Don’t worry if you don’t have a concrete answer but try anyway. The challenge today is to get thinking and get wondering.

What are your interests? Who do you serve? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? What motivates you? What discourages you? What do you want to be remembered for? What impact do you want to have on people?

And maybe these questions might seem a bit daunting so consider these first:

What movie/book character do you think acts a lot like you? What would you do to pass time if you were shut inside a small cabin, alone for 3 months, high up in the mountains? (don’t worry there’s food and water) What would you grab if your house was on fire? If time froze and you had forever to master a skill, what skill would you like to master? What’s your favourite piece of clothing? What are your favourite accessories?

There are many more questions you can consider but you can use these for starters or for reference to know what to consider.

It’s like playing 21 questions but with yourself. Please be honest with yourself and consider what makes you… you. That’s the challenge for today.

To consider what your brand is.
