Matthew 6:21

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21 ESV

COMMENT:
In Matthew 6, Jesus talks about many important things. He addresses the Lord’s Prayer, practicing our righteousness with the right heart posture, the posture of fasting, and the truths behind anxiety.

But what stood out to me in particular today was the section about laying up treasures in Heaven and building our treasures on earth.

A few months ago, God taught me a lesson. Everything on this earth is temporary. It all has an expiration date. He also taught me that even though things and people change and fluctuate in life, he never will. It is better to depend on Someone who has and always will be the same than to place your trust in something that only lasts for a short time.

Today’s verse brings up some very important questions. Where is your treasure? What is it that your heart truly values? Where do you turn when you seek rest and hope? Your answer can tell you a lot about your posture.

Do you turn to the things/feelings that the world provides, or do you turn to the Lord and to the true peace he gives?

You see, idols can be disguised as MANY things, not JUST material stuff. They can be feelings, people, emotions, etc. But let me tell you one thing. No matter what they are, NOTHING will fill that longing void in you but God. Only being in the presence of God can give you what truly satisfies.

The only treasure that truly matters is being adopted into the family of God and having a relationship with him. This treasures turns us from peasants to royalty. Nothing, no music, no celebrity, no fleshly desire, no other person can give you what God can.

Set your heart on things above and not on the earth below.
