“The plans of the heart belong to man but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.”
~Proverbs 16:1 (ESV)
COMMENT:
When I came across this verse during my study of Proverbs, it really, really resonated with me. It reminded me of something that we, in our everyday lives, take very often for granted.
When you get up in the morning, what is the first thing you think about? How many tasks you have to accomplish throughout the day? How much studying you have to do for that test next week?
You see? The first thing that runs through our heads before our days even begin are the plans we have made for ourselves. We automatically have this mindset that tomorrow or even next Thursday will arrive indefinitely and that our plans will go according to schedule.
We make plans thinking that everything will unfold perfectly and on our timetables, but only God knows how our day will end. He controls the final outcome of our lives. If He decides to bring a sudden and unexpected change to our plans, its up to us to decide how we will deal with it. It’s up to us to decide if we will grow spiritually or become hardened and closed off because of it.
The results of the plans of our hearts are ultimately decided by the tongue of God.
