Psalm 4:7-8
ESV
7 You have put more joy in my heart
then they have when their grain and wine abound.
8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Here David expresses that though the ungodly have joy in success, favour, and what they are earning yet in times of trouble, what gives David joy is God, who supplies this joy. God is our consistent everlasting joy. Unlike belongings, our achievements and success can come with joy temporary but followed by sorrow, God is not like man.
God, unlike the weather which we love today but so much tomorrow if it’s extreme. Unlike human beings who can give us joy today but sorrow tomorrow. Unlike belongings which are there today and give us heartache tomorrow. God is the only consistent joy we can have. When we make Him our delight, our trust, refuge, our everything, priority and hope. We won’t be disappointed because God stays when nothing else stays and God remains when everything else can perish.
Though we are promised troubles (John 16:33) we are also promised peace (John 14:27). We can have joy, peace and hope during trying times.
In verse 8, David explains that despite the chaos around Him. The accusations, the slander and attacks, that He can go to sleep in peace. Not in anxiety, panic or fear because God makes him dwell in safety.
Though David was betrayed many times and attacked by his people. David, in this isolation, found God to be all He needs. He has found God to be his joy, peace and gladness.
Today, I want you to be encouraged that you don’t have to be in anxiety, you don’t have to be in worry and fear because peace is promised. Take time to be alone today with God, isolate yourself with God for some time. This can be fasting from distractions or simply just making time for God in a tough time. Cast your cares and burdens upon Him (1 Peter 5:7), call on His peace, His presence and love and worship.
Worship God, for in worship our focus isn’t on our circumstances, feelings or ourselves but it now focuses on God and in Him, there is no fear, no panic, no anxiety but in Him we have true rest and can lay down as David did, knowing our Father will take care of us.
We can say “in peace now I can rest”
